The Equine Grass Sickness Fund (EGSF), jData, Dr Hayley Coulson and with funding from the RS Macdonald Charitable Trust, have put together a new case reporting and analytics platform, as well as a weather risk owner alert system for Equine Grass Sickness.
The Whatsapp weather alert system allows owners to sign up to receive weekly or monthly alerts via Whatsapp, which will identify their risk of weather more highly associated with an EGS case.

It has been established that certain patterns in weather, and in particular patterns of temperature fluctuations and breaks in drought, followed by sufficient rainfall, may lead to a higher incidence of EGS cases. These models were integrated into a real-time analysis system utilising weather forecasts and allows for users to select a region of interest (currently limited to the UK) and obtain risk alerts for potential EGS. Users can opt to sign-up to weekly or monthly WhatsApp messages, which will contain a historical risk prediction for their selected geographical area (e.g. a livery yard or field) over a predetermined period, providing valuable information that informs potential risk of EGS for equines under their care.
The link to sign-up to the alert system can be found here: https://moredun.connectanimalhealth.com/apps/egssubscribe/ and for more detailed information on the models used we invite you to visit our EGS dashboard at https://moredun.connectanimalhealth.com/apps/egsview/
BHS FRIENDS AT THE END
Losing a horse can be one of the hardest things you may ever face in your lifetime. The BHS know this, and run a brilliant service known as “Friends at the End.” The BHS have been a huge support to the Equine Grass Sickness Fund over the years and we are proud to advertise this wonderful resource for horse owners who may be struggling to face the end of their horse’s life. We know that they are not just pets, but family members, partners and treasured companions. The cruel twist of fate with Equine Grass Sickness is that the affected animal is very often a young horse. Losing a young equine is a cruel twist of fate that can make saying goodbye that much more difficult.
The BHS launched Friends at the End in January 2013 in order to support horse owners and carers when it is time to say goodbye to their beloved equine companion.
They offer free, confidential support to horse owners, carers, sharers, and loaners before, during and after the death or loss of a horse. You don’t need to be a BHS member to get support. The BHS Friends at the End team can be contacted by phone or email, and you’ll receive support from trained BHS staff or volunteers.
More information on “Friends at the End,” can be found here: Friends at the End | The British Horse Society
If you feel that you might benefit from talking to someone through the Friends at the End scheme, the BHS Horse Care and Welfare Team are available to offer you advice and support with any questions or concerns you may have.
Don’t hesitate to call the BHS on 02476 840517* or email friendsattheend@bhs.org.uk
Opening times are 8:35am-5pm from Monday – Thursday and 8:35am-3pm on Friday.
