A HOOF OVER OUR HEADS
by Jane Bates
"Shiloe
weighs 730 lbs. and all of them were planted on one of
my toes. It was painfully unequal competition, but
because the farrier and five or six other people were
nearby, I managed to restrain the urge to publicly
question my pony's parentage.
"You all right?" asked the farrier.
"Yes," I lied through clenched teeth. "I've got
another nine to walk on."
Shiloe and I exchanged silent scowls. His scowl said
clearly, you mess with my feet, I'll mess with yours.
Mine said, your pedicure is costing me £3.50 per hoof;
you might at least pretend to appreciate it."
Life with horses has a lot of ups and downs. The
worst day of my life was when my beloved horse Phantom
died from equine grass sickness. Prior to that, we had
so much fun together, me and my "gentle giant" causing
mayhem around Minehead. ‘A Hoof over our Heads’ is my
tribute to him and to the other horses, like Shiloe,
who have enriched my life.
I hope this book will serve both to raise awareness
and money! 100% of the money for the book will go to
the Equine Grass Sickness Fund.
THANK YOU for your support.
