| Referral of Grass Sickness Cases
The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies [R(D)SVS] and the Moredun Research Institute, both in Edinburgh, Scotland, have been leading players in grass sickness research and treatment for many decades. The above nursing regime for chronic cases was developed at the R(D)SVS Equine Hospital and affected horses can be referred for investigation and treatment via your own veterinary surgeon. A full time nurse, funded by The International League for Protection of Horses assists with this programme. The fees are subsidised by the Equine Grass Sickness Fund and charges will only be made for drugs and carcass disposal. If animals are referred with diseases other than grass sickness, full fees and costs will be charged. Research Currently research is taking place in several centres but most is concentrated around Edinburgh, Scotland. Here aetiological studies into the role of Clostridium botulinum, oxidative stress and white clover are taking place. Pathological and physiological studies into neurological damage and its relationship to clinical features as well as studies into the treatment of chronic grass sickness are actively being pursued. Collaborative work with other centres involves epidemiological studies with the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket, Clostridium botulinum studies with Liverpool University. Dr Bruce McGorum, |
